Colombia’s Digital Nomad Visa

Colombia introduced its Digital Nomad Visa, known as the "Visa V Nómadas Digitales," to attract remote workers and digital entrepreneurs, Allowing eligible individuals to live and work in Colombia.

Tax Considerations:

According to our legal advisors:

  1. Visa and Tax Residency: Obtaining a visa allows you to stay in Colombia for the granted period but does not automatically make you a tax resident.

  2. Tax Residency Criteria: Spending 183 days or more within a 365-day period in Colombia establishes tax residency. However, being a tax resident does not necessarily mean you are tax liable.

  3. Tax Liability Conditions: As a tax resident, you become tax liable if you meet any of the following criteria within the tax year:

    • Asset Ownership: Owning assets valued over approximately $171,018,000 COP as of December 31st of the previous year.

    • Income or Expenditure: Earning or spending more than approximately $53,206,000 COP in a year.

  4. Tax Filing Obligation: If deemed tax liable, you are required to file taxes with the Colombian tax authority (DIAN) through an online form.

Eligibility Requirements:

The Digital Nomad Visa is available to citizens from countries exempt from needing a short-stay visa to enter Colombia. Applicants must provide the following documents:

  • Passport Photocopy: A copy of the personal information page of your valid passport.

  • Proof of Legal Entry: A copy of the page in your passport showing your last entry or departure stamp from Colombia.

  • Employment Documentation: A letter in Spanish or English from one or more foreign companies you provide services for, detailing the nature of your relationship and the remuneration received. If you have a contract, provide it, or demonstrate that you are a partner or co-owner of a company abroad with a letter indicating that your work is conducted remotely.

  • Motivational Letter: For entrepreneurs, submit a letter explaining your project and the financial and human resources you have or plan to have for your enterprise.

  • Financial Proof: Bank statements demonstrating a minimum income equivalent to three times the Colombian minimum legal monthly wage (approximately $750 USD) in the last three months.

  • Health Insurance: A policy covering risks such as accidents, illness, maternity, disability, hospitalization, death, or repatriation for the duration of your stay in Colombia.

  • Passport Photo: A passport-style photo with a white background, sized 3 cm x 4 cm, in JPG format, with a maximum size of 300 kb for the online application.

Application Timing:

  • Initiate Early: If already in Colombia, start the process at least 45 days before your tourist permit or its extension expires, ensuring you do not exceed the 180-day tourist allowance.

  • Processing Duration: After submitting the visa application, a response is typically expected within 30 days.
