Mexico Residency by Crayon Global

Crayon Global provides comprehensive relocation services with a team of expert attorneys and accountants. Below is an overview of the Mexico residency process, requirements, and our specialized services to assist you every step of the way.

Step 1: Apply for a Mexican Visa

  • Residency visas cannot be issued within Mexico. You must apply at a Mexican Consulate or Embassy.

  • A visa sticker will be affixed to your passport, valid for six months (single entry).

  • Once you enter Mexico, you must complete the residency process within 30 days.

Step 2: Obtain Your Resident Card

  • After arriving in Mexico, visit the local INM immigration office to exchange your visa sticker for a Resident Card.

  • Some consulates limit permanent residency to retirees, while others are more flexible in their approvals.

Processing Time & Residency Types

  • Temporary Resident Card

    • Issued for one year, renewable for 1, 2, or 3 years.

    • After 4 years, you may apply for permanent residency.

    • Allows multiple entries/exits from Mexico.

  • Permanent Resident Card

    • No expiration date.

    • Residency renewals/replacements must be completed in Mexico at an INM office.

Important: The process takes up to 4 weeks for your Resident Card to be issued. You must remain in Mexico during this time unless you apply for a special exit permit.
